Frequently Asked Questions

How are ships built today?

In this day and age, a large vessel is a feat of innovative engineering. Multi-deck segments of the hull or main superstructure will be built and then transported to the dock to be lifted and welded into place.

Many modern shipbuilders will also pre-install specific equipment such as pipes, electrical cables and other important components to avoid any assembly or installation deep within the hull of the vessel once it’s been welded together.

What is classed as a new build?

New builds are usually constructed to the exact specifications of a client for a particular purpose within the sector such as cruise ship services or the transportation of goods.

Why refit your ship?

In contrast to a new build, the refit of a ship entails refurbishing and replacing components within an existing vessel. Within the marine industry, refitting has become increasingly popular in recent years. This is for a number of reasons, including:

  • Modernising the vessel
  • Implementing more environmentally friendly infrastructure
  • Extending the lifespan of the vessel
  • A shorter timeframe compared with a new build
  • More cost-effective process

What is the timescale of a ship conversion?

The timescale of a ship conversion will depend on a number of important project components including the size and type of ship being converted.

How can you procure a ship?

The procurement of a vessel and how you go about it will differ between types of ships. However, in general, there are three main stages to purchasing a vessel – the negotiation and contract, the inspection of the vessel itself and lastly, the completion of the sale. The inspection stage is usually carried out by a professional marine company such as SeaTec.

What is a 3D Survey?

As the name suggests, a 3D survey is a combination of different technologies that work to recreate a three-dimensional survey of a space or room. In the maritime industry, a 3D survey allows the sector to create an accurate three-dimensional survey of a new build or existing vessel. This is useful for a number of marine services, including new builds, refitting and maintenance.
